Pueblo Viejo mine completes 59th environmental monitoring exercise

Barrick’s Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic has completed its 59th Participatory Environmental Monitoring exercise. This milestone marks over a decade of quarterly monitoring designed to involve various stakeholders, including community members, academics, journalists, and local authorities, in the direct observation of environmental conditions surrounding the operation.

Launched in 2012, the program focuses on monitoring key parameters such as air quality, noise levels, and water quality. Participants engage in field-based activities, accompanying technical teams to collect samples from rivers, water bodies, and discharge points. Since 2021, the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) has participated as an independent third party to provide verification.

The initiative is part of the company’s strategy for responsible mining, aiming to build trust through transparency and social dialogue. Previous verifications have indicated that water quality in the remediated areas meets required standards and has shown improvement.
