Puerto Aysén selected for early cancer detection strategy

The Chilean government has launched the first stage of the Universal Early Cancer Detection Strategy in primary health care, including the commune of Puerto Aysén. This initiative aims to provide non-invasive exams to identify gastric and colorectal cancer cases early, facilitating timely referrals to specialized care.

The colorectal cancer screening targets individuals aged 50 to 69 with lower digestive symptoms. The gastric cancer screening will initially focus on individuals aged 30 to 39 presenting with upper digestive symptoms without alarm signs. The program is designed to prioritize colonoscopies and endoscopies for those in genuine need, improving the efficiency of the healthcare network.

Bárbara Ortúzar, the Aysén Government Regional Secretary, stated that the policy aims to reduce gaps in access to diagnosis and treatment. The Ministry of Health has allocated approximately $600 million to support the implementation of these health services.
