Canary Islands police dismantle international heroin trafficking route

The Spanish National Police have dismantled a major international heroin trafficking route that utilized the Canary Islands as a strategic entry point. In a significant operation, authorities intercepted 21 kilograms of heroin in Gran Canaria. The shipment was reportedly destined for mainland Spain and had arrived via a maritime route bypassing traditional African continental controls.

Four individuals, described as two couples, were arrested during the operation. The suspects had traveled from Toledo to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the same flight but took separate seats and stayed in different hotels to evade detection. One couple was tasked with receiving the drugs, while the other was responsible for transporting them to the mainland using rental vehicles. The group was apprehended in a hotel cafe in the Santa Catalina-Puerto area.

In a separate incident in Maspalomas, police dismantled a drug distribution point operating out of a massage and therapy center. This operation led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of various substances, including cocaine, mephedrone, hashish, and ecstasy, along with over 300 grams of a crystalline substance.

Authorities have characterized the heroin seizure as the largest of its kind in Spain for 2026, highlighting the evolving tactics of criminal organizations to establish new, undocumented transit channels through the archipelago.
