Puerto Hondo Mangrove Nursery Expands Production in Ecuador

The community mangrove nursery in Puerto Hondo, Ecuador, launched in January 2025 as part of Holcim Ecuador’s social‑investment program. The project, run by the Fundación Holcim Ecuador together with the local Association of Small Farmers, produces red (Rhizophora mangle) and black mangrove seedlings, reaching an output of about 2,000 plants.

The nursery, now a member of the Global Mangrove Alliance and partnered with Conservation International, provides income for more than 14 community members through seedling sales, reforestation services, volunteer activities and eco‑tourism, linking ecological restoration with local economic development.
