Quintana Roo expands electrical infrastructure to combat outages

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the government of Quintana Roo have announced a series of infrastructure projects to address frequent power outages and rising energy demand in the state. Following meetings between Governor Mara Lezama and municipal authorities, the CFE outlined plans to modernize the electrical grid to support the region's rapid urban and tourism growth.

Key investments include over 551 million pesos for Cancún, 408 million pesos for Playa del Carmen, and 166 million pesos for Othón P. Blanco. Planned works involve constructing new substations, replacing transformers, and upgrading transmission lines. In Cozumel, the CFE is moving forward with a bidding process for a new 115 kilovolt undersea cable and the installation of an additional 25 MW generation unit to bolster the island's electrical backup.

Local authorities in Playa del Carmen have also expressed intent to cooperate with the CFE through independent municipal projects and partnerships with the business sector to ensure new developments include necessary infrastructure. The state currently has an installed transformation capacity of 2,057 MVA against a maximum recorded demand of 1,370 MW.
