Mexico: Diverse legislative and electoral developments

Various legislative and electoral developments are occurring across Mexico. In Quintana Roo, the IEQROO has announced that its call for District and Municipal Councils will include affirmative measures to ensure representation for groups facing discrimination, including indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and the LGBTTTIQA+ community.

In Querétaro, LGBTQ+ collectives are preparing an injunction to be presented to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation regarding the Gender Identity Law. Additionally, federal deputy Laura Ballesteros has proposed the ‘Empty Cradles Law’ to guarantee paid leave and support for families experiencing gestational or neonatal loss. The state legislature is also reviewing modifications to the Mobility and Road Safety Law, with a session scheduled for October 30.

Electoral organizations are also expanding participation. The INE in Yucatán has opened a call for citizens to join District Councils for the 2027 and 2030 elections, offering a monthly stipend of 22,911 pesos. Similarly, the 11th District Board of the INE in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, is seeking citizens to serve as electoral counselors to oversee democratic processes.
