Puerto Natales aerodrome to undergo phased renovation

The Chilean Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has confirmed a phased renovation plan for the Teniente Julio Gallardo Aerodrome in Puerto Natales, scheduled to take place between January and March. Following discussions with local productive sectors, the government rejected a total closure of the facility to avoid negative impacts on regional tourism and commerce.

The $7.213 billion CLP project will utilize a shift-based work system (4x3 and 5x2) to maintain partial operations. During the first ten days of January, a runway length of 1,600 to 2,000 meters will be available, accommodating Airbus A320neo aircraft. Until February 2, a 1,200-meter runway will remain operational for BAE/RJ aircraft, general aviation, aeromedical evacuations, and Antarctic connectivity.

The MOP projects that these measures will allow for the maintenance of 67% of passenger and cargo flights in January, 41% in February, and 32% in March. This interim conservation work serves as a transition toward a larger $60 billion CLP modernization project, including a new runway and passenger terminal, which is expected to be tendered in 2027.
