Puerto Peñasco solar plant reaches 420 MW capacity
The Rafael Galván Maldonado photovoltaic plant in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, is currently generating 420 megawatts (MW) for the National Electric System (SEN) through its first two operational phases. Managed by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), the project is part of the Plan Sonora de Energías Sostenibles and represents a total investment of $1.685 billion.
Construction is underway for the third phase, which aims to add 300 MW to the grid. This phase has reached over 27% physical progress, with a target operational date by the end of 2027. Current work includes the installation of over 84,000 steel posts to support approximately 563,000 photovoltaic panels.
Once all four stages are completed, the complex is expected to reach an installed capacity of 1,000 MW (1 GW). This would make it one of the largest solar projects in Latin America, capable of supplying electricity to more than half of the population in Sonora.
