Puerto Plata aims to expand through sports tourism

Sports entrepreneur Hugo José González has identified sports tourism as a strategic opportunity to diversify the economy of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He noted that hosting sporting competitions can drive economic growth by benefiting the hospitality, gastronomy, transport, commerce, and service sectors.

González highlighted that Puerto Plata possesses the necessary conditions to become a sports tourism hub, supported by natural attractions and strategic infrastructure projects. These include the future Autopista del Ámbar, which will improve connectivity with Santiago and the Cibao region, and the development of Punta Bergantín.

Additionally, the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay cruise terminals are viewed as key platforms for offering recreational and sporting activities to international visitors. González called for collaboration between government authorities and the private sector to integrate sports and tourism through long-term strategies involving infrastructure, promotion, and investment.
