Puerto Plata beaches under red flag due to heavy swells
Authorities in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, have issued a red flag warning and prohibited swimming at several beaches along the Atlantic coast due to anomalous swells, water turbidity, and dangerous currents. The phenomenon, described as a ‘mar de fondo’ (swell), is caused by long, high-energy waves propagating from distant storms or winds.
Restricted areas include Sosúa, Cabarete, El Pueblito, Playa Teco, and Maimón. In some areas, such as Cabarete and Sosúa, the sea has already reached vendor stalls. While Punta Rucia and La Ensenada are currently exceptions to the swimming ban, excursions to Cayo Arena remain subject to evaluation and authorization by the Dominican Navy.
Civil Defense and the Prevention, Mitigation, and Response Committee (CPMR) have urged the public to respect all signage and advised operators of small or fragile vessels to avoid going to sea until conditions improve.
