Puerto Plata economic development focuses on tourism and sports

Economic development in Puerto Plata is being driven by infrastructure investments and the promotion of sports tourism. Hugo José González, provincial director of the National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI), stated that sports tourism is a strategic opportunity to diversify the regional economy, attract private investment, and create jobs in the northern region.

González noted that high-level athletic competitions directly benefit the hospitality, gastronomy, transport, and local service sectors. Key infrastructure projects, such as the Autopista del Ámbar highway and the Punta Bergantín multipurpose project, are expected to enhance connectivity and logistics for international events. Additionally, the arrival of cruise passengers at Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals provides opportunities to structure short-stay sports agendas.

Separately, José Ramón Durán, president of the Municipal Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in Puerto Plata, highlighted the historical role of PLD administrations in developing the province's tourism sector. He cited investments in tourist ports, the historic center, the amphitheater, and the José Briceño stadium as key factors that strengthened the local economy and supported rural communities through various social and productive programs.
