Puerto Plata advances major infrastructure and urban development projects

Government officials and local authorities in Puerto Plata are highlighting significant infrastructure and development progress in the province. Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza announced that a new solid waste management plant, representing an investment of over RD$1,000 million, is scheduled for inauguration on September 18. This project aims to replace traditional open-air landfills with a system focused on environmental recovery and waste valorization.

In the municipality of Villa Montellano, local leaders noted a period of transformation driven by projects such as Punta Bergantín, which is expected to create employment and economic opportunities. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Puerto Plata, Diomedes Roque García, has initiated urban intervention programs in the sectors of Padre Granero, Bello Costero, and La Laguna. These efforts include cleaning ravines, removing debris to improve drainage, and reclaiming public spaces from illegal parking and obstructions to enhance pedestrian mobility.

However, some residents in Villa Montellano have called for peaceful demonstrations to demand the fulfillment of promises regarding flood prevention infrastructure, specifically requesting the construction of storm drains and gabion walls along the Camú River following recent flooding events.
