Dominican Republic launches new tourism and accessibility initiatives
The Dominican Republic is implementing several initiatives to strengthen its tourism sector, with a heavy focus on Puerto Plata. Tourism Minister David Collado launched the national program ‘Turismo Cerca de Ti’ (Tourism Near You), which aims to integrate the entire value chain to improve sustainability, security, and quality across destinations.
In Puerto Plata, new efforts are underway to improve accessibility through the ‘Puerto Plata, Destino Accesible’ agreement, a partnership between the Tourism Cluster of the Destination Puerto Plata, Travegali, and the Ministry of Tourism. This project includes infrastructure improvements, staff training, and a roadmap to make the region more inclusive for travelers.
Environmental and maintenance efforts are also being prioritized. The Ministry of Tourism has authorized permanent beach cleaning operations in Puerto Plata to support local municipal programs. Additionally, Taíno Bay addressed recent social media concerns regarding water discoloration in the San Felipe Bay, clarifying that the phenomenon was caused by the movement of seabed sediments from cruise ship propellers rather than illegal discharges.
