Puerto Rican documentary on coquí frogs to premiere in theaters
The documentary “Los coquíes de Puerto Rico,” directed by Sonia Fritz, is set to begin theatrical screenings on September 17 at Fine Arts Popular and Fine Arts Miramar in San Juan. Based on over 52 years of research by biologist Rafael Joglar, the 60-minute film explores the various species of the coquí frog, their ecological significance, and the threats they face from climate change.
The production blends science, history, and conservation, tracing the relationship between the coquí and Puerto Rican culture from the Taíno era to the present. Filming took place in diverse locations, including the El Yunque rainforest, the Carite Forest Reserve, the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Center, and Mona Island. The film highlights that of the 17 known species, three are extinct and five are critically endangered. The documentary is presented in Spanish with English subtitles and is intended to serve as an educational resource for biodiversity and conservation.
