Puerto Rico documentary on coquí frogs premieres in theaters

The documentary “Los coquíes de Puerto Rico” (The Coquís of Puerto Rico) has begun theatrical screenings at Fine Arts Popular in Hato Rey and Fine Arts Miramar. Directed by Sonia Fritz, the film is based on the extensive research of biologist and University of Puerto Rico professor Rafael Joglar, who has studied the species for 52 years.

The production explores the history of the coquí frog from the Taíno era to the present, showcasing the amphibians in natural habitats such as caves, plateaus, and forests. It highlights the species' ecological importance and the specific threats they face due to climate change and other environmental challenges.

Designed to be an educational resource, the 60-minute film is intended for general audiences, including students and teachers, to facilitate discussions on biodiversity and conservation. The documentary is presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
