Puerto Rico faces extreme drought and severe water crisis
Puerto Rico is experiencing a severe water crisis driven by intensifying drought conditions and failing infrastructure. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, extreme drought (D3) has expanded to cover 33.31% of the territory, nearly doubling in just one week. Overall, approximately 73.4% of the island is experiencing some level of drought.
The shortage has led to significant water rationing. In several municipalities, including San Juan and Trujillo Alto, the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) has implemented rotating 48-hour water interruptions, affecting approximately 180,000 customers and over half a million people. Some communities have reported going without water for extended periods.
Beyond the lack of rainfall, the crisis is exacerbated by deteriorating infrastructure, with reports suggesting up to 60% of water is lost due to leaks and poor maintenance. In response to the emergency, Governor Jenniffer González signed orders to declare a state of emergency. Additionally, U.S. Congressional leaders have called for a Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation into the causes of the shortage and the resilience of the territory's water and wastewater systems.
