Puerto Rico requests admission as the 51st U.S. state

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González has signed Joint Resolution 66-2026, formally requesting that the United States Congress and President Donald Trump admit the island as the 51st state of the Union.

González, representing the New Progressive Party (PNP), stated that the move aims to secure full political rights and equality for Puerto Ricans, fulfilling a government commitment to prioritize statehood. She noted that the resolution is a distinct mechanism from previous efforts, as it serves as an official legislative request from the Puerto Rican government rather than merely reporting the results of non-binding referendums.

The request comes amid the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. While the PNP advocates for statehood, the political landscape in Puerto Rico remains divided; the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) supports maintaining the current Commonwealth status, and the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) advocates for full independence.
