Puerto Rico implements water rationing amid severe drought
Puerto Rico is facing a severe water crisis as authorities implement drastic rationing measures to combat an intense drought. Approximately 180,000 properties across seven regions are affected by the restrictions. To manage limited supplies, many households have been divided into two groups, with water service being shut off on a rotating 48-hour basis.
Governor Jenniffer González stated that the decision was made following an evaluation of the depleted Carraízo reservoir. The island is currently experiencing its driest July on record, with 68% of Puerto Rico facing drought conditions.
Compounding the weather-driven shortage is a long-standing infrastructure crisis. The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority reports that roughly 65% of produced water is lost or unbilled, primarily due to leaks and aging, deteriorating pipes. Residents in the capital, San Juan, have faced service outages and have relied on water tanker trucks to meet their needs.
