Puerto Rico political status faces debate over citizenship and statehood

Political tensions are rising in Puerto Rico regarding the island's relationship with the United States. Miguel Rivera, a Republican candidate for Attorney General in Washington D.C., has proposed a project to change how citizenship is granted in Puerto Rico. Rivera argues that while current residents hold citizenship under the 14th Amendment, his proposal would transition future births to statutory citizenship, a move he claims is steering the island toward independence.

Simultaneously, the Puerto Rican House of Representatives and Senate have passed resolutions requesting that the U.S. President and Congress incorporate the island as a state. This move has faced criticism from the MINH party, whose co-presidents, Carlos Vega and Ángel Rodríguez León, claim the push for statehood is an attempt to divert attention from severe governance issues. They cited ongoing crises including water rationing, electricity instability, failing school infrastructure, and corruption scandals involving government officials.
