Puerto Vallarta authorities investigate deaths of 11 crocodiles

Authorities in Jalisco have confirmed the deaths of 11 adult American crocodiles in the regions of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas over recent weeks. The deaths are suspected to be the result of intentional killings.

The Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet) issued a call for the public to respect local wildlife and strengthen protection and surveillance efforts. Officials clarified that the recent increase in crocodile sightings is not due to overpopulation, but rather a result of the rainy season, which causes the reptiles to move more frequently between rivers, estuaries, and the sea.

Experts estimate the local population consists of between 300 and 350 crocodiles of various ages. In response to the deaths and increased human-wildlife interaction, authorities are increasing patrols, installing preventive signage in high-visibility areas, and training tourism service providers. Investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the specimens.
