Puerto Vallarta experiences traffic congestion and economic boost as school year begins

The start of the 2026-2027 school year has caused significant traffic congestion in Puerto Vallarta, affecting major arteries such as Avenida Francisco Villa, the road to Las Juntas, and Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio. The sudden increase in vehicle volume, driven by parents and public transportation, led to long delays and gridlock during morning peak hours.

While the traffic surge has strained local infrastructure and complicated commutes for workers, the return to school has provided an economic boost to the region. Local merchants, including stationery stores and food vendors near schools, reported sales increases of up to 40 percent compared to the vacation period. More than 50,000 basic education students have returned to classes, with attendance rates exceeding 90 percent on the first day.
