Puerto Vallarta seeks economic diversification through national initiatives

Mexico's economic landscape has undergone a significant transformation through trade liberalization, evolving from an oil-dependent economy to a global manufacturing hub. Since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994, exports have grown from approximately 15 percent of the GDP to over 30 percent, fostering industrial corridors in states such as Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Nuevo León.

Building on this national industrial growth, efforts are underway to diversify the economy of Puerto Vallarta beyond its traditional reliance on tourism. Juan Carlos Castro Almaguer has engaged with the Secretariat of Economy to discuss the ‘Home Port’ project, an initiative aimed at expanding the destination's tourism capabilities. The goal is to integrate the Jalisco municipality into national strategic projects to ensure long-term economic competitiveness and benefit local workers and businesses.
