Puerto Vallarta to become cruise home port amid tourism fluctuations

Puerto Vallarta is set to become a cruise ship home port, a project expected to significantly boost the regional economy. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro announced that the federal government selected Puerto Vallarta over competing destinations like Mazatlán, Los Cabos, and Nayarit. Construction is scheduled to begin next year. Unlike its current status as an intermediate port of call, a home port designation will allow vessels to start and end their routes in the city, encouraging longer visitor stays and increased spending in the hotel and restaurant sectors.

This development comes amid recent challenges for the local tourism industry. Data from Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) indicates that Puerto Vallarta experienced a 13.7 percent drop in passenger traffic during the summer of 2026 compared to the previous year. Between June and August, the city's airport handled approximately 1.32 million passengers, a decrease of about 211,000 travelers from the same period in 2025.
