Puerto Vallarta Violence Aftermath Spurs New Security Strategy

On 22 February 2026, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) unleashed a wave of violence in Puerto Vallarta, burning stores, setting hundreds of vehicles ablaze and blocking main roads. The attacks, which followed the federal forces’ killing of cartel leader Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” drew international attention and sharply lowered residents’ sense of safety.

Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro said the disruption exceeded any recent incidents in the state and will require a long‑term response.
