Puerto Varas waste depot sparks municipal and health controversy

More than 15 formal complaints have been lodged with the Puerto Varas municipality over a recently installed waste‑storage structure on a shared servitude in the San Alfonso sector. Residents say the containers were placed without prior consultation on a pathway used daily by the Westfalia I, Westfalia II, San Juan, Ganadera Línea Vieja communities and other users.

The neighbours report foul odours, waste accumulation and fear that the site could attract rodents and insects, raising sanitary concerns in a region where hantavirus cases are relatively high. One resident described the placement as "super inappropriate" and pledged to support efforts to review the decision. Municipal inspectors visited the site on June 25, photographed the installation and forwarded the case to relevant departments for further review.

The dispute has also drawn comments from nearby businesses, including Australplastic and Salfa Salinas y Fabres, which claim they were not consulted about the structure that directly impacts their surroundings. The municipality has received a transparency‑law request for construction permits and related documents, and the ongoing investigation continues.
