Puglia associations propose October 1st school start date

Associations representing tourism and hospitality, specifically Confesercenti Brindisi and the Italian Association of Diffuse Hospitality Managers (AIGO), have proposed delaying the start of the school year in Puglia until October 1st.

In a letter addressed to Puglia Regional President Antonio Decaro and Councilor Silvia Miglietta, Michele Piccirillo argued that mid-September starts are no longer suitable due to rising temperatures. He noted that many school buildings lack adequate cooling systems, making it difficult for students to remain in classrooms for extended periods.

The proposal suggests adapting the academic calendar to the changing climate without reducing total instructional time. Additionally, the associations highlighted the economic benefits of extending the tourism season through September and the high costs associated with retrofitting all schools with air conditioning and electrical upgrades.
