Puglia bans raw tomatoes in collective catering due to Salmonella alert

Health authorities in Puglia, following a national Task Force meeting on September 30, have issued a precautionary ban on the use of raw fresh tomatoes in collective catering. This measure affects schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and socio-assistential facilities. The directive requires that raw tomatoes, particularly cherry tomatoes, be replaced with cooked vegetables in approved menus.

Epidemiological investigations have linked an increase in Salmonella Strathcona ST2559 cases across Puglia, Lombardia, Lazio, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the consumption of raw tomatoes. A contaminated batch has been traced to Caltanissetta, Sicily. While the ban is widespread in the Puglia region, including local enforcement by Asl Brindisi and Asl Lecce, the Municipality of Bari has reported that no cases have been linked to its local schools.
