Italy infrastructure: widespread roadworks and maintenance projects
Various regions across Italy are undergoing significant road infrastructure projects, ranging from major tunnel maintenance to local urban redevelopments.
In the Tenda Tunnel, which connects Italy and France, the Mayor of Roccavione, Paolo Giraudo, is demanding explanations from Anas regarding continued time-restricted access despite the project being nearly complete. Similarly, in Enna, labor unions are questioning the ongoing restrictions and cost increases for the Euno viaduct, which was inaugurated over a year ago.
In Sicily, the Consorzio Autostrade Siciliane (CAS) has denied rumors of imminent highway closures on the A18 and A20, though the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) continues to press for safety improvements following technical reports on aging barriers. In Messina, maintenance on the Tremestieri viaduct is set to begin in November, requiring complex alternative traffic arrangements.
Local municipalities are also implementing safety and modernization measures: Barrafranca is installing artificial speed bumps, Barletta is conducting fiber optic excavations, and Troina has launched a 3-million-euro urban road maintenance plan. In Lecce, work on Via XXV Luglio is expected to conclude by December, while San Gimignano has reopened the Via Santo Stefano walkway following structural consolidation.
