Puglia Region authorizes wolf capture in Noicattaro

The Puglia Region has authorized the capture and removal of a wolf spotted in the municipality of Noicattaro following an incident on August 4, 2026. Regional President Antonio Decaro signed the decree after receiving a favorable opinion from ISPRA, which classified the animal's behavior as level 5 criticality under the experimental protocol for urban and habituated wolves.

A specialized operational team has been formed to carry out the capture, including experts from the University of Bari, the CNR-IRET of Lecce, ASL Bari veterinarians, and the Carabinieri Forestali. The operation will follow strict technical guidelines, including potential pharmacological immobilization under veterinary supervision.

Following the capture, the wolf will undergo clinical examinations, genetic analysis, and sterilization before being placed into permanent captivity. Monitoring of the area has been expanded using camera traps in locations where the animal has been reported.
