Puglia reports significant increase in 2026 wildfire activity
Regional authorities in Puglia have met to evaluate the 2026 wildfire season and begin planning for the 2027 campaign. The meeting, led by Environment and Climate Assessor Debora Ciliento, included representatives from the Civil Protection Department, Carabinieri Forestali, Vigili del Fuoco, and Arif.
Data from the 2026 season indicates a significant increase in fire activity. Between June 1 and September 15, 2026, the regional Civil Protection unit recorded 3,376 fires, approximately 1,000 more than in 2025. Notable increases were observed in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani (+80%), Bari (+70%), Lecce (+46%), and Foggia (+32%), while Taranto saw a slight decrease of 0.53%.
Carabinieri Forestali estimated that approximately 15,726 hectares were burned. Officials noted that the fire season began earlier this year, with significant interventions occurring as early as mid-May. Discussions also focused on addressing intentional arson, which has led to investigations and arrests, and the development of a new regional plan for forest fire prevention and active combat.
