Pukyong National University researcher develops AI service to track Busan shark
A researcher at Pukyong National University, Noa Lee, has developed a real-time web service called ‘Bukangi is it here now’ to track the location of a shark, nicknamed ‘Bukangi,’ appearing in the Busan North Port Waterfront Park. Developed in just one day using an AI coding agent, the service allows citizens to report sightings by clicking buttons or uploading photos.
To ensure data reliability, the platform utilizes a multimodal AI module to verify whether uploaded photos are authentic on-site images or mere screenshots from broadcasts. The system also restricts location-based reporting to users within the park's radius. Within two weeks of its launch, the service recorded approximately 20,000 cumulative visits.
While the digital service manages public information, local authorities including the Busan Metropolitan City and the Coast Guard continue to face challenges regarding the shark's physical relocation. Previous attempts to lure the shark using specialized nets were unsuccessful, leading officials to monitor the animal's health daily instead.
