Pulau Sapi crocodile sighting triggers special search and safety measures
Authorities in Sabah have launched a special operation to locate and relocate a crocodile reported in the waters of Pulau Sapi within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TTAR). The sighting occurred near Beach B on October 5.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin stated that Sabah Parks and the Sabah Wildlife Department are conducting joint patrols and have installed nets in high-risk areas. These nets are being closely monitored to prevent the accidental capture of other marine life, particularly sea turtles.
In response to the sighting, new safety protocols have been implemented for water activities. Solo swimming and snorkeling are now prohibited; visitors must participate in groups. Tourism operators for scuba diving, snorkeling, and sea walking are required to conduct preliminary inspections of activity areas before allowing tourists into the water. Warning signs have been posted, and lifeguards have been instructed to provide continuous safety reminders to visitors.
