Pulicat Lake fishermen agree to GPS demarcation to end disputes
Fishermen from 25 hamlets in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have reached a unanimous agreement to resolve long-standing territorial disputes in Pulicat Lake by adopting GPS-based technology. During a joint meeting at the Gummidipoondi Panchayat Union Office, representatives proposed replacing traditional palmyrah tree trunks—which often rot in saltwater and cause boundary confusion—with a permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking mechanism.
The proposed framework involves fitting motorized and traditional boats with automated GPS transponders to establish clear digital maritime coordinates. This shift aims to move accountability directly to the vessels rather than relying on physical markers in shifting waters. The National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) is expected to assist in establishing these exact coordinates.
The resolution comes amid central government efforts to address dwindling aquatic resources in the region. The Union Fisheries Ministry is currently implementing a Rs 133.11 crore project to stabilize the Rayadoruvu sea mouth following representations from Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy.
