Bavaria pumpkin cultivation faces weather challenges
Pumpkin farmers in Bavaria, particularly in the Knoblauchsland region near Nuremberg, have faced difficulties due to summer heavy rain and hail. Jochen Loy, managing director of the Knoblauchsland vegetable producer association, noted that these weather conditions caused bruising on young fruits, which is not ideal for the final harvest.
Despite these challenges, the demand for pumpkins remains high. The region utilizes an irrigation system that has mitigated drought concerns, ensuring supply stands remain well-stocked. In 2025, 405 businesses in Bavaria grew edible pumpkins across a total of 1,333 hectares, an increase from nearly 1,000 hectares in 2024.
Experts note that the Hokkaido variety is particularly significant due to its ease of use in the kitchen. Pumpkin cultivation remains a competitive sector alongside other major vegetable crops like carrots, lettuce, and onions.
