Pumpkin season begins in Germany with diverse varieties and local markets
The pumpkin season in Germany typically runs from late August or early September through November, with many varieties being storable until spring. While most edible pumpkins can be consumed with their skin, the texture and cooking time vary by variety.
Hokkaido and Patisson pumpkins generally do not require peeling as their skins are edible. In contrast, varieties such as Butternut and Muskat may require longer cooking times if the skin is left on, making peeling a common recommendation. Other varieties, including Spaghetti pumpkin and Baby Bear, should not be eaten with the skin.
In the Southwest region, specifically around Karlsruhe, various local farms and markets are hosting seasonal events. Notable locations include Bine’s Kürbisgarten in Graben-Neudorf, which offers over 100 varieties of ornamental and edible pumpkins, Kürbishof Andres in Weingarten with approximately 300 varieties, and Obstbau Wenz in Pfinztal-Söllingen.
