Pumpkin season drives consumer demand in Germany

As autumn approaches, supermarkets are seeing a significant surge in demand for various pumpkin varieties, including Hokkaido and butternut. Industry experts note a seasonal phenomenon of 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) among shoppers, with demand peaking in September and October.

Despite some regional variations in crop yields, farmers do not expect supply shortages. Consumers are encouraged to purchase pumpkins while they are in season, which typically lasts through November. The Hokkaido variety remains particularly popular due to its edible skin, which softens during cooking.

Beyond culinary uses in soups, curries, and baked goods, pumpkins offer high utility as the flesh, seeds, and oils are all usable. Botanically classified as a berry, the pumpkin is a long-standing agricultural staple originally from Central America.
