Punch the Japanese macaque turns 1, celebrated with 2,500 global birthday cards
Punch, a Japanese macaque born on 26 July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden, was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. Zoo staff rescued him, fed him by bottle and gave him a plush orangutan toy to develop his grasp reflex. Video of the infant clutching the toy went viral in February 2026, prompting a worldwide fan base and a surge of visitors, about half of them from abroad. For his first birthday on 26 July 2026 the zoo displayed roughly 2,500 cards and messages from fans worldwide in a dedicated indoor exhibit. The publicity helped raise ¥58 million (≈US $350 k), which funded a new air‑conditioning system for the zoo. After six months of special care Punch was moved in January 2026 into the main monkey enclosure, where he now lives with around 50 other macaques and no longer relies on the plush. The zoo also reported incidents of unauthorized YouTubers entering the enclosure in May and a laser‑pointer incident a month later.
