Pune IT engineer dies by suicide amid dowry harassment allegations

A 33-year-old IT engineer, Trishna Rahul Sakpal, died by suicide in the Keshav Nagar area of Pune, Maharashtra, allegedly due to dowry harassment and mental cruelty. Following her death on September 29, 2026, the Mundhwa Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against five family members, including her husband, Rahul Sakpal.

According to the complaint filed by her father, Balkrishna Nikam, the deceased was subjected to continuous pressure to hand over her entire salary to her in-laws. Additional demands included transferring her parental home flat to her mother-in-law and purchasing a flat worth one crore rupees for her father-in-law. The family alleges she was also physically assaulted regarding these demands.

Trishna had reportedly moved back to her parental home in 2021 due to the harassment, after which her husband filed for divorce. Her family claims he was pressuring her for a divorce because he intended to remarry. In a suicide note left behind, she reportedly wrote, ‘My in-laws are responsible for my death. I cannot bear any more.’ Police are currently conducting a forensic investigation of the note.
