Puźniki mass grave search extended after primary site remains unfound

Researchers have extended their search for a mass grave in Puźniki, located in the Ternopil region, following the failure to locate the primary burial site during the most recent phase of work. The search, which began on August 31, was originally scheduled to conclude on September 6, but investigators must continue to examine a site exceeding one hectare of the former cemetery.

Experts believe there are at least three distinct burial locations. One site, discovered in 2023, was exhumated in 2025, revealing the remains of 43 individuals, including women and minors. However, researchers conclude this was likely not the main mass grave described by historical witnesses. The primary site, referred to as M1, is believed to be a double grave that may contain the remains of approximately 40 additional victims murdered in February 1945.

The investigation is a collaborative effort involving the Freedom and Democracy Foundation, the Pomeranian Medical University, and the Ukrainian archaeological firm Volyn Antiquities, with oversight from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Institute of National Remembrance. Further work is expected to continue, potentially into October 2026.
