Punjab announces ban on spy gadgets to protect privacy
The Punjab government has announced a ban on spy gadgets and covert electronic devices to protect citizens' privacy and fundamental rights. The measure targets everyday items equipped with hidden cameras and recording technology, such as pens, eyeglasses, and watches, which have been used for unauthorized surveillance, harassment, and blackmail.
Authorities stated that a primary objective of the ban is to ensure the safety of women and children. The Punjab Home Department noted that the decision follows numerous complaints regarding the misuse of personal information through concealed equipment. Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi indicated that a formal notification will be issued within days, providing the public time to dispose of prohibited items before strict legal action is taken against the illegal use, purchase, and sale of these devices.
In a related development, the Lahore High Court is hearing a public interest petition concerning the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones. The petition highlights concerns regarding personal dignity and national security, noting that high-tech devices, including Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, are being sold openly in local shops despite Pakistan not being an official market for the product.
