Punjab approves Rs10 billion subsidy to combat rising flour prices

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a Rs10 billion subsidy package to combat soaring flour prices. The decision follows a sharp increase in wheat costs, which reached Rs5,200 per 40kg in Punjab after a Rs400 rise in just four days.

To stabilize the market, the provincial government will increase the quota of subsidized wheat supplied to flour mills. Currently, wheat is provided at a rate of Rs3,800 per maund (approximately 40kg). The Chief Minister has directed authorities to ensure the uninterrupted availability of affordable wheat and flour, warning that negligence in providing public relief will not be tolerated.

Retail prices have seen significant hikes; in Lahore, an 80kg bag of fine flour rose by Rs1,000 to reach Rs12,500. Officials are also investigating allegations of artificial inflation to ensure that government subsidies effectively reach consumers.
