Punjab Assembly passes resolution to protect voter rights
The Punjab Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution calling for constitutional safeguards to protect the voting rights of eligible citizens. The resolution, moved by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, follows the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Cheema urged the Union government and constitutional authorities to ensure transparency and impartial scrutiny regarding reported discrepancies in electoral rolls. He expressed concern over reports of large-scale deletions and the potential exclusion of eligible voters, which he stated could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
The resolution also seeks an independent investigation into electoral roll errors and calls for accountability to ensure that no citizen is denied their right to vote. Cheema cited Articles 324, 325, and 326 of the Constitution, emphasizing the importance of preventing discrimination in voter rolls and guaranteeing universal adult suffrage.
