Punjab Assembly passes resolutions on water rights and welfare schemes
The Punjab Vidhan Sabha unanimously passed eight resolutions during the final day of its 13th session, addressing critical issues regarding water rights, public welfare, and religious corridors.
Key resolutions include demands for Punjab’s equitable share in Yamuna waters and the retention of control over irrigation headworks at Ropar, Harike, and Ferozepur. The Assembly also rejected the Dam Safety Act, 2021, and addressed river water royalties for the Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas rivers supplied to Rajasthan. Additionally, the House urged the Union Government to execute the Ujh Multipurpose Project to prevent Ravi river waters from flowing into Pakistan.
Regarding social policy, the Assembly passed a resolution to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of public welfare schemes. Finance Minister Harpal Cheema moved this resolution, emphasizing that direct financial assistance provides essential relief for farmers, mothers, and families facing medical crises. The House defended these expenditures against claims of waste, noting the impact of programs such as free domestic electricity, women’s financial assistance schemes, and healthcare access.
Finally, the Assembly passed a resolution requesting the Union Government to reopen the Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.
