Punjab Assembly suspends Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira
The Punjab Assembly has passed a motion to suspend Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for the remainder of the current legislative session. The decision followed a motion moved by State Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who accused Khaira of using unparliamentary language and deliberately disrupting House proceedings during a protest in Question Hour.
The suspension occurred amidst chaotic scenes in the Assembly, where Congress MLAs staged a walkout and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The opposition's protests were linked to the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota.
Congress leader Sachin Pilot criticized the suspension, describing it as an “attack on democratic values” and the voice of the people of Punjab. Pilot urged the Chief Minister to focus on state issues such as fiscal management, the drug menace, and rising gun violence rather than targeting the opposition.
