Punjab BJP Calls for Justice for Sanitation Workers After Police Lathi Charge

A Punjab BJP delegation headed by Gezza Ram Valmiki met the Governor of Punjab in Chandigarh on July 27 and handed over a memorandum demanding justice for sanitation workers who were hit by police lathi‑charge during a peaceful protest in Barnala on July 22. The memo asks for the immediate removal of DSP Satveer Singh Bains and SHO Lakhvinder Singh, filing of FIRs under the Scheduled Castes/Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and swift action to address the workers’ long‑standing demands.

The delegation highlighted that the police action showed abuse of authority and urged the Governor to ensure a rapid, accountable investigation. Following the incident, further protests erupted, and National Commission for Sanitation Workers vice‑chair Hardip Singh Gill ordered a factual report, after which the state government suspended DSP Bains.
