India implements high security ahead of Independence Day

India is implementing heightened security measures across several regions ahead of Independence Day on August 15, 2026. In Delhi, the capital is on high alert with a multi-layered security grid. Delhi Police have banned aerial platforms including drones and paragliders, and have prohibited kite flying near event venues. Security forces have deployed thousands of personnel, including paramilitary units, and have installed approximately 1,000 CCTV cameras around the Red Fort. Authorities have also circulated posters featuring 19 wanted terrorists from groups such as Al-Qaeda, Indian Mujahideen, and various Khalistani organizations to encourage public vigilance.

In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has met with the Governor to request a 10-day parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, a prisoner serving a life sentence for the 1995 assassination of Beant Singh, citing humanitarian reasons due to his mother's failing health. Meanwhile, the Punjab DGP has directed district police in Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana to intensify patrolling and surveillance.

In Haryana, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth held meetings with both the Governor and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to discuss regional security, civil-military synergy, and the welfare of ex-servicemen and Agniveers. In Bihar, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary participated in the 'Sahyog' programme to resolve citizen grievances and announced new educational initiatives, including the opening of 211 degree colleges.
