Punjab gangster Amritpal Singh detained in Canada

Amritpal Singh, also known as Harpreet Singh or Amrit Dalam, has been detained by Canadian police. The 33-year-old resident of Mianpur village in Bathinda district is categorized as a Category A gangster by the Punjab Police and faces approximately 20 criminal cases in India.

His charges include murder, extortion, drug trafficking, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act. He is allegedly the mastermind behind the January 2024 murder of village sarpanch Avan Kumar and is suspected of involvement in the murder of another elderly sarpanch. Authorities believe he fled to Canada using a fake passport to evade arrest.

Following his detention, Canadian police handed him over to central law enforcement agencies. The Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, has begun the legal paperwork and extradition proceedings to bring him back to India. Reports indicate a Red Corner Notice had been issued against him through central agencies prior to his detention.
