Punjab government reports 68,228 merit jobs and investment drive as unemployment remains high

The Punjab Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution confirming that the Mann administration has filled 68,228 government posts through merit‑based recruitment since April 2022. The same resolution cited 9,899 investment proposals worth about ₹1.84 lakh crore, projected to generate roughly 616,000 private‑sector jobs across sectors such as manufacturing, steel, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, IT and healthcare. Companies mentioned include Tata Steel, Nestlé India, Ambuja Cements and others.

In a separate parliamentary briefing, the Union Labour and Employment Ministry reported that Punjab’s youth unemployment rate remains well above the national average, standing at 19.3% in 2025 versus 14.3% nationwide. Unemployment among educated youth (secondary education or higher) was 9.3% compared with 6.5% nationally. The centre highlighted 2,990 projects approved under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, releasing ₹145.93 crore and creating 29,782 jobs, and noted the new Industrial and Business Development Policy‑2026 offering subsidies and incentives to attract further investment.
