Punjab healthcare advances with liver transplants and robotic surgery

Healthcare advancements in Punjab, India, are marked by significant milestones in both surgical technology and transplant capabilities. At the Punjab Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (PILBS) in Mohali, medical teams successfully performed three liver transplants within a single week. These procedures involved family donations, including a wife to her husband, a mother to her daughter, and a son to his father. Minister Dr Balbir Singh announced that PILBS has now completed five liver transplants in total and is part of a state-wide hub-and-spoke model to expand organ transplantation services through government medical colleges.

In the field of orthopaedics, robotic-assisted surgery is increasingly being utilized for joint replacements to address rising cases of arthritis. This technology allows for 3D virtual mapping and sub-millimeter precision in bone cuts and implant placement. The use of robotics aims to provide personalized outcomes, minimize soft tissue damage, and improve the longevity of artificial joints compared to traditional manual techniques.
