Punjab imposes Section 144 amid security threats
The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 13 to 17 due to serious threats to public peace and citizen safety. The notification, issued by the Punjab Home Department, bans the assembly, procession, or gathering of five or more people in public places, highways, and open spaces.
The restrictions also prohibit the carrying or display of all types of weapons in public areas and forbid inciting or encouraging participation in banned gatherings. These measures follow reports from law enforcement and intelligence agencies regarding imminent security threats, specifically indicating that terrorist organizations may target large public gatherings, such as rallies, sit-ins, and demonstrations.
Exemptions from the order include wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, and gatherings at mosques or other places of worship. Additionally, courts, government institutions, and events held with official permission are exempt. The ban does not apply to law enforcement or security personnel performing official duties.
